Stones hurled at Prodattur BJP nominee's car

By Our Staff Reporter

CUDDAPAH, APRIL 5. Irate TDP functionaries hurled stones at the car of the BJP candidate of Proddatur Assembly constituency, Kovvuru Balachandra Reddy, in Proddatur town on Monday, causing a simple injury to the district BJP president, Narala Bali Reddy, on his chin. The windshield of the car was damaged in the stone-throwing.

Addressing a press conference at Proddatur this evening, Mr. Bali Reddy, who had a plaster on his chin, condemned the attack by the TDP functionaries as `atrocious and cowardly.' The TDP functionaries who ought to strive for the BJP's win, resorted to stone-throwing, he alleged. Mr. Bali Reddy, Mr. K. Rajagopala Reddy and Mr. Balachandra Reddy dared the dejected ruling party men to prove their mettle by fielding their leader, M. Linga Reddy, as an independent, rather than resort to `bulldozing' tactics. Meanwhile, the BJP district general secretary, V.V. Chalapathi, vice-president, N. Maheswara Reddy, and publicity secretary, Sarath Chandra Kumar, also condemned the attack at a news conference here.

They condemned the attack by protesting TDP functionaries who raised anti-BJP slogans. The BJP would hold an emergency meeting at Proddatur on Tuesday and decide whether the BJP should strive for the victory of TDP candidates in the district, they said. Earlier, the TDP functionaries staged a protest rally from the market yard to the Puttaparthi centre and staged rasta roko in Proddatur for over two hours, demanding that the TDP retain the Proddatur seat and field the constituency incharge, M. Linga Reddy.

The ruling party leaders warned that they would not allow the TDP Cuddapah Parliamentary constituency candidate, M.V. Mysoora Reddy, to canvass in the segment if the seat was not allotted to the TDP. The ruling party functionaries staged a dharna in front of the Proddatur MRO office today evening, with the demand to allot the seat to the TDP.
