National Communist Party to contest in Pondy

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, APRIL 5. The secretary of the Karaikal unit of the National Communist Party (NCP), Thanga Devadoss, announced here today that he would contest the Lok Sabha poll in the Union Territory.

Addressing a press conference here today, Mr. Devadoss said he was upset over the lack of any specific plan for balanced development of Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam regions. None of the representatives from Pondicherry had done anything substantially for the development of the Union Territory. Referring to the plight of people in Karaikal region, he said the region was already gripped by repeated spells of drought. There was at the same time clandestine sale of sub-soil water to private industries. Industrial effluents discharged by chemical units had also damaged the environment and affected the health of people. If elected to Lok Sabha, he would strive hard for the comprehensive development of Pondicherry. He said unemployment problem was affecting the youth and no party that had held office here had paid attention to this problem.
