By Our Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM, APRIL 5. The Director-General of Police, I.K. Govind, today gave away cash awards to 15 police personnel for nabbing Kora Raman alias Manikkal Raman, said to be the brain behind a series of house thefts, at a simple function held on the premises of the Kottakuppam Police station near here.

The DGP honoured the Inspectors of Police, Kalitheerthan (Kallakurichi), Thavasumani (Sankarapuram), Sub-Inspectors, Kannan (crime) and Chellamuthu (prohibition enforcement wing), and 11 policemen, and gave a purse of Rs 30,000.

Eighty-five sovereigns of gold jewellery and 475 diamonds, all worth about Rs 25 lakhs, were recovered from the accused.

Those who were present included the Deputy Inspector General of Police, P. Kandaswamy, and the Superintendents of Police, S. Nallasivam and Rajiv Kumar.

Mr. Govind told reporters that Kora Raman and 13 of his accomplices were involved in 34 housebreaking incidents, spanning across seven districts. They remained elusive for over 15 years.

The gang had looted property worth about Rs 1 crore in the districts of Villupuram, Cuddalore, Thiruvannamalai, Coimbatore, Vellore, Dharmapuri and Nagapattinam. He was captured when he tried to burgle a house on Thiagadurgam Road near Kallakurichi on January 25.
