Three struck by lightning
Belgaum April 5. Three members of a labourer's family, including two brothers, died when they were struck by lightning near Mannur village on Sunday. Another person, identified as Mallappa, who suffered burns have been admitted to the Government hospital here. Balappa Yamanappa (45), his nephews, Yallappa Nagappa (15) and Basappa (13), were hit by lightning when heavy rain lashed the city and surrounding areas. The victims were working in a quarry. The police have registered a case.
SIT symposium tomorrow
TUMKUR April 5. The Association of Electrical Sciences of Siddaganga Institute of Technology (SIT), Tumkur, is organising "Technisium-2004," a national-level technical symposium, here on Wednesday. The Principal of SIT, M.N. Channabasappa, and the president of the association, Basavarajaiah, told presspersons here on Monday that student teams from over 175 engineering colleges from Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala had sent entries for presenting papers at the technical session. Of them, 65 teams had been chosen. Dr. Channabasappa and Prof. Basavarajaiah said the topics ranged from energy management and power electronics to non-conventional energy sources and image processing. Senior business leaders from seven industries would hold an interactive session with the students. They said the symposium, which is held every year, would do a lot of good to the students. They said that Shashikiran Mullur, Managing Director of Hical Magnetics, Dilip Sawhney, Chief Executive Officer of G.E. Fanuc Systems, and M. Narasimha Reddy, CEO of Anapolous India, would attend the inaugural function. R. Dileep, Principal, Karnataka Police Training College, Channapatna, would deliver the valedictory address and give away the prizes.
Three hurt in attack by dacoits
Bidar April 5. Two contractors were seriously injured at Aurad when dacoits attacked them and took away Rs 5,000 in cash and valuables from them on Saturday night. Chennappa Patil, Govindrao Bhagwanrao, and his assistant, Umesh, were waylaid by four dacoits at Mamadapur village near Aurad. The contractors and the other persons were returning from Tegumpur, where a well is being dug for a drinking water project for the town. Mr. Bhagwanrao lost many of his teeth when a dacoit hit him in the face. All the three have been admitted to the hospital. The Deputy Superintendent of Police, Mr. Rathod, visited the spot. A case has been registered at the Aurad police station.
Flag march by security forces
CHITRADURGA April 5. Security forces, including the local police, conducted a flag march here on Monday. The Superintendent of Police, G.B. Chebbi, said two companies of Central Industrial Security Force, 250 personnel of the District Armed Reserve, and 30 commandos participated in the flag march. "Two companies of CSIF have been deployed in Chitradurga district in view of the elections," he said and added that flag marches were also planned in Challakere and Hiriyur.
Shimoga accident toll nine
SHIMOGA April 5. The death toll in the van-bus collision at Purle about 10 km. from here on Sunday has risen to nine with one more person succumbing to his injuries at the McGann Hospital here. He has been identified as Chandrashekhar (24). The accident occurred when the van carrying a marriage party collided with a private bus.
Rain lashes Tumkur
TUMKUR April 5. There was heavy rainfall in Tumkur and its surrounding areas on Sunday night. Rain, accompanied by gales, lashed the city and its surroundings for more than two hours. This was the first downpour in four years in the district which has been hit by drought for four consecutive years. The entire Tumkur city was plunged into darkness owing to power shutdown following the rain. Power supply was restored on Monday morning in some areas of the city and in the rest of the places in the afternoon.
