The gruesome incident came to light when 11-year-old Daljeet, son of Paramjeet Singh, a resident of Ravinagar in Tilak Nagar, came out of his house shouting for help around 4 a.m. His neighbour and landlord, Iqbal Singh, heard his cries and also noticed that he was bleeding from behind his ear.
Daljeet pleaded with him to save his mother from his father. Iqbal rushed into the house and managed to overpower Paramjeet. By then Paramjeet had stabbed his wife, Balwinder Kaur, and daughters, Arvind Kaur and Jaspreet Kaur, several times.
All the four injured were taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital where Jaspreet was declared dead on arrival. Arvind was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, while her mother and twin brother, Daljeet, were discharged after medication.
During interrogation, Paramjeet, who used to drive an autorickshaw, said he was passing through a financial crisis as he had suffered huge losses in gambling and had decided to abandon his family. However, this morning when he was about to leave the house, he realised that there would be no one to take care of the family and, therefore, decided to kill them. But, the police believe that he could have pre-planned the attack.
Around 4 a.m., when the entire family was asleep, Paramjeet woke up and then went on a stabbing spree targeting his children first. Jaspreet, a student of Jassa Singh Ramgarhia Public School, was stabbed thrice in her stomach with a scissor, while Arvind sustained injuries in her neck. When they began shouting, Balwinder woke up and tried to stop her husband. But, he stabbed her twice in the stomach.
Meanwhile, Daljeet rushed towards the door. In a bid to stop him from going outside, Paramjeet stabbed him behind his ears. But the young boy, kept running and managed to alert his neighbour.
Paramjeet had held the scissors with a handkerchief apparently to avoid any fingerprints on the weapon of offence.
