NEW DELHI, APRIL 5. A fire broke out in the Farakka Express soon after the train left Old Delhi railway station this afternoon. However, alert passengers averted a major tragedy and no one was injured in the accident. According to reports reaching here, as the Malda Town-Bhiwani Farakka Express left Old Delhi railway station at 12-40 p.m., a minor fire was reported in the 11th coach. Passengers immediately pulled the emergency chain and the train came to a halt at the nearby Kishanganj station where the railway staff and their fire-fighting unit doused the fire. After checking the affected coach, the train again left the station. However, again after a few minutes, passengers noticed yet another fire, this time in the third and fourth coaches. Immediately, the railway staff aboard the train was informed and the train was again stopped at the next station at Daya Basti. Immediately fire tenders were pressed into action and fire was brought under control. The train then left on its onward journey. According to senior railway officials, no one was injured in the fire accidents and the property damage was also minor. They, however, informed that some passengers had seen a man wearing yellow shirt jumping out of the train after the second fire incident. Passengers even chased him but he managed to flee. Terming it as an attempted sabotage, they said further investigations were being carried out by the Additional Divisional Railway Manager, Delhi, along with Delhi Police and Railway Protection Force personnel. A hunt had also been launched to nab the suspected culprit, they added.
