Vajpayee has no firm stand: Congress

By Our Staff Correspondent

SHIMLA, APRIL 5 . Prabha Thakur, Member of Parliament and All-India Congress Committee spokesperson, said today that there was a big gap between what the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, says and what he does. Talking to media persons here, she said the meaning of the word `Atal' was `firm', but unfortunately the Prime Minister was always `wavering' in his statements.

The Prime Minister, who had stopped talking about the Ram temple after assuming office, is once again declaring its construction in Ayodhya, she said. Similarly the Gujarat riots were criticised as well as justified at different times by the Prime Minister.

Citing another case, she said Mr. Vajpayee first accepted the resignation of Defence Minister George Fernandes, but later restored his ministry before the investigative agencies cleared him of his charges. Again, the Prime Minister, who had talked of `Aar-Parr ki Ladai' decided to call back the forces from Kargil after spending crores of rupees and wasting the sacrifices of our brave soldiers, blamed the AICC spokesperson.

She also took exception to the remarks and use of foul language by some BJP leaders like Pramod Mahajan, Vinay Katiyar, Praveen Togadia and Narendra Modi about the AICC President Sonia Gandhi. "Such remarks against a woman member of the respected Nehru-Gandhi family is an insult to womanhood," felt the Congress leader.

"The Prime Minister is mischievously keeping quite and not controlling these leaders. Instead he is telling the Opposition to maintain a dignified campaign in the elections," she added.

Ms. Thakur maintained that a number of scams like allotments of petrol pumps, coffin scam, HUDCO and UTI scams had taken place right under the nose of Prime Minister Vajpayee.

"No Minister of the Vajpayee Cabinet was told to resign and corruption was patronised by none other than the Prime Minister himself," she pointed out.
