ROPAR, APRIL 5. The CPI (M) General Secretary, Harkishan Singh Surjeet, said here today that his party would support the Congress in forming government, after the Lok Sabha elections, to provide it ``strength and stability.'' However, talking to media persons, he denied that his party was hungry for power. Criticising the BJP's declaration that it would introduce a law to ban persons of foreign origin from holding constitutional post, including that of the Prime Minister, Mr. Surjeet ruled out BJP succeeding in its endeavour. Claiming that the NDA would not return to power as the Opposition had gained an ``upper hand'', Mr. Surjeet said CPI (M) would win 60 out of 70 Lok Sabha seats it was contesting. The veteran leader also lashed out at BJP leaders for resorting to ``character assassination'' of Sonia Gandhi and her family members and bringing the election debate to the lowest level. ``BJP leaders were doing this in utter frustration and diverting the attention of the people from the real issues confronting the nation,'' he told reporters. Earlier, the CPI (M) leader addressed a meeting of party workers in support of the party candidate from Hoshiarpur, Darshan Singh Mattu, and called for strengthening the secular and democratic forces to defeat the ``communal forces represented by BJP.''
