Permission sought to act against dissidents

By Our Staff Correspondent

MYSORE, APRIL 5. The differences in the city Congress unit over the allocation of the party ticket for the Assembly constituencies in the city came to the fore today with the President of the Mysore City Congress Committee, D. Made Gowda, writing to the party leadership seeking its permission to initiate disciplinary action against the former Mayor, Vasu, and the former MLA, K. Harshakumar Gowda.

Mr. Made Gowda's letter to the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President, B. Janardhana Poojary, seeking permission to proceed against Mr. Vasu and Mr. Harshakumar Gowda comes in the wake of an "illegal" meeting convened by Mr. Vasu at his residence on Sunday night, where Mr. Harshakumar Gowda is learnt to have lashed out at the party's leadership in the city.

More than 500 party workers are learnt to have attended the meeting at Mr. Vasu's residence along with prominent leaders such as the MLC, Marithibbe Gowda, the Vice-President of the Mysore City Congress Committee, K.R. Subbukrishna, M.C. Chikkanna, Corporator, Muktharunnisa Begum, former MLC, and former President of the city Congress unit, Dase Gowda.

The participants at the meeting reportedly criticised Mr. Made Gowda for recommending the names of "new-entrants" for the Krishnaraja and Chamaraja Assembly seats over that of "long-serving and loyal" Congress workers.

In the letter addressed to Mr. Poojary, Mr. Made Gowda said Mr. Vasu and Mr. Harshakumar Gowda, both ticket aspirants for the Chamaraja segment in the city, criticised the party High Command and the leadership over the issue of ticket to new comers, even before the Congress could take a final decision on the nomination. "Their action has caused damage to the party's image. They have violated the party discipline," Mr. Made Gowda said.

He sought to bring to the party leadership's notice that Mr. Vasu had invited a lot of party workers to his residence for a dinner meeting. "During the meeting, Mr. Harshakumar Gowda lost his mental balance and spoke against the party leadership," Mr. Made Gowda said in the letter.

Several party leaders, including the office-bearers of various block committees of the party in the city, were bringing pressure on the Mysore City Congress Committee to rein in Mr. Vasu and Mr. Harshakumar Gowda, Mr. Made Gowda said.

The letter despatched to Mr. Poojary has been attested with newspaper clippings.

It may be mentioned here that Mr. Made Gowda had recommended the names of the Mysore Urban Development Authority Chairman, Sandesh Nagaraj, and Raghu Achar for the Chamaraja and Krishnaraja Assembly constituencies, respectively.

Meanwhile, Mr. Subbukrishna said the proceedings of the meeting had been faxed to the All India Congress Committee President, Sonia Gandhi.
