Mangalore
By Our Staff Correspondent
MANGALORE, APRIL 5. D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate in the Mangalore Lok Sabha Constituency, has described the exit of the former, K. Jayaram Shetty, from the party as "inconsequential". Mr. Shetty joined the Janata Dal (Secular) recently. Answering queries from presspersons here on Monday, he said Mr. Shetty had not shown any concern towards the BJP which had given him so much during the past few years. Meanwhile, leaders in the Ullal Assembly Constituency unit of the BJP has said that the party will win in the constituency, particularly after the exit of the former MLA, K. Jayaram Shetty, from it. Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Premananda Shetty, President of the Ullal block unit of the party, and Chandrashekar Uchil, party candidate in the constituency, alleged that the voters in the constituency were unhappy with their member of the previous Assembly, who was from the Congress, as development and community improvement works had been neglected. Work on the water supply scheme had come to a standstill, while rural and fisheries roads had been ignored. If elected, the BJP would work for the overall development of Ullal and the welfare of the minorities. Mr. Premananda Shetty said the exit of Mr. Jayaram Shetty had opened up avenues for the party in the constituency. He denied that there was any effort by the BJP or other Sangh Parivar organisations to malign Mr. Jayaram Shetty. The party had given the latter all chances, but he chose to join the Janata Dal (S), which was nothing but power mongering. Mr. Uchil said one of main problems faced by the people of Ullal was sea erosion. The previous MLA was ineffective in handling the problem which surfaced every monsoon. It needed an immediate and permanent solution, he added.
