Appoint authority to look into DMK irregularities: AIADMK

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, APRIL 5. The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has asked the Election Commission to appoint an authority at a competent level to go into allegations of irregularities by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and debar the party from contesting the Lok Sabha election.

In a memorandum, the party treasurer, Dindigul Sreenivaasan, said the DMK's reply to the EC failed to satisfy many questions and issues raised by his party.

The AIADMK pointed to a resolution passed by the DMK general council to collect Rs.25 crores to meet the expenses of the 2004 election. However, in its reply the party stated that the funds were meant not only for the current election, but also for so many elections that would be held in the future.

This was contrary to the DMK's own records and earlier announcements made in the party's official organ, `Murasoli'.

Mr. Sreenivaasan also contested the DMK's statement that no prospective candidate was asked to deposit Rs.60 lakhs.

"No answer has been given by Thiru M. Karunanidhi [DMK president] with respect to the announcement, appearing as a box announcement, in his own party newspaper."

One such applicant was Aladi Aruna, a former DMK Minister, who clearly stated that he was urged by the high command to deposit the amount.

The EC had vast powers by virtue of Article 324 of the Constitution.

The Supreme Court held that the EC had plenary powers under Part XV of the Constitution, he said and urged the EC to appoint an authority to go into the issue in depth and debar the DMK from fielding candidates in the coming election.
