NEW DELHI, APRIL 5. A man, who had been allegedly stealing electric wires in huge quantities in the outskirts of the Capital, was arrested by the Crime Branch of the Delhi following exchange of fire in West Delhi on Sunday night. The police have recovered firearms and the equipment he used for stealing the wires. The Anti-Kidnapping Section of the Crime Branch was pursuing information about an electric wire thief who was active in North-West, West and South-West Delhi causing disruption in power supply in several villages. On Sunday evening, following a tip-off, a police team, under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police, Shivendra Kant Tiwari, were following the suspect, who was in a Tata Sumo, on Nangloi-Ranholla Road around 10-30 p.m. Even while fleeing, the suspect, later identified as Rajbir Singh Rathi, a resident of Rohtak in Haryana, opened fire and then took a turn on a village road. He fired again but the police retaliated and apprehend him. Three country-made revolvers and 10 live cartridges were recovered from the accused, apart from ropes, blades, hammer, screwdriver and a monkey cap. The vehicle had been stolen from Uttam Nagar in West Delhi last year. During interrogation, the accused, son of a retired Army personnel, told the police that he first came in contact with vehicle-lifters while working in a garage. His father had got him employed in the garage as he was not interested in studies. The Janakpuri police arrested him for the first time in 1987 on charges of stealing scooters. In 1991, he was arrested for robbery. The accused was arrested for stealing electricity wires, estimated at several crores of rupees, by the West Delhi police for the first time in 2000. He told the police that he had been disposing of the stolen wires to some prominent scrap dealers in the Capital. On January 26, last year, Rajbir was intercepted by a Police Control Room van while stealing wires at Dabri in South-West Delhi. But he managed to escape after firing on the policemen. In the past few months, some of his associates have been arrested by the police. They have been identified as Satyanarayan, Ram Balak Mahato, Mahesh, Rajesh Yadav and a scrap dealer, Pawan.
