Woman stalked at IHC

By Anjali Dhal Samanta

NEW DELHI, APRIL 5. In a shocking incident, a middle-aged man allegedly hurled abuses and threatened to sexually assault a theatre artiste at India Habitat Centre here on Saturday evening.

According to the victim, Nandita Chandra, who was a part of Feisal Alkazi's Ruchika Group staging "Red Earth" that evening, the accused came and stood near the entrance of the amphitheatre and starting harassing the usher. "I was on stage when I heard a commotion. As soon as I finished my part I went to the entrance where this man was harassing the usher. He was insisting that he be allowed to watch the play. But we told him that since it was a ticketed show, he should buy a ticket," said Nandita.

The accused, however, insisted that the posters advertising the show had claimed that there would be no charges. "He started abusing us and saying that he was a journalist and would write bad things about us in the newspaper. Then he said that he was a lawyer and would sue us. I took him to see one of the posters and showed him where the ticket denominations were mentioned. Then I walked away," said Nandita.

That's when things went out of hand. "He started following me and used very abusive language. Then he threatened to rape me. And when I turned around and asked him whether he was threatening me, he said he would rape me there and then as there were no witnesses. And then he said he would slap me," claimed Nandita.

That's when Nandita called the police and the India Habitat Centre security. "I couldn't leave before the play was over and so I went back. Once it finished, we went to the police station," said Nandita.

"According to officials at India Habitat Centre, neither the accused nor his parents are members of the Centre. They also insist that the incident was not a security breach. "Anyone can walk into India Habitat Centre. This is not something that can be blamed on the security but we are glad that the girl took the right step and contacted the police," said Manager Services, IHC, P.S. Bhogal.

For Nandita, the incident has robbed her of a feeling of security. "I feel really scared when I am alone now. When I was packing up at IHC yesterday, I kept thinking someone would jump at me or come from behind me in the parking lot. I am not the kind of person to be intimidated soon but now I am feeling scared," said Nandita. A case under Section 509 (outraging a woman's modesty) has been registered at the Lodhi Colony police station and investigations are on.
