This Day That Age
Dr. C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar, inaugurating the Theatre Centre at the Museum Theatre in Madras on April 6, referred to the importance of the dramatic art for moulding national life and expressed the hope that the Centre would function like the French Academy and serve to keep up the standard of production in literature, drama, essay and poetry. Mr. C. Subramaniam, Finance Minister, who presided, said that unlike various other fine arts like painting, music, etc., drama would be incomplete without an audience and so it played a great part in building up the character of the people. Srimati Rukmini Devi, President of the Theatre Centre, welcomed the gathering and said that the aim of the Centre was to revive drama in India. It was a movement affiliated to the UNESCO and the all-India movement, of which Srimati Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya was the President.
