This Day That Age
Disturbed by negative tactics, the MCC have asked the English county cricket clubs to discourage "defensive bowling, wide of the leg stump" and to keep a record this year of the number of overs bowled per hour. In a statement in London on April 5, England's cricket controlling body said that this bowling was neither in the spirit nor in the interests of the game. They did not think legislation was desirable, but they did urge the county clubs to discourage such tactics. Referring to the MCC statement, Sir Donald Bradman said in Adelaide that he was "delighted" to hear of the MCC criticism of defensive bowling down the leg-side. "Let us hope this pronouncement will bring us better and brighter cricket for the 1954-55 England-Australia Test series in Australia," Sir Donald said.
