PATHANAMTHITTA, APRIL 6. The putrefied carcasses of a wild tusker and a bison were found in the Plappally forest station limits of the Goodrickal forest range in the Ranni Forest Division today. The carcass of the elephant was found at Theekallar, near Plappally. According to sources, there is every possibility that the tusker may have been killed by poachers. There have been reports on the increasing instances of poaching in the Ranni Forest Division during the past one year. The tusks of the elephant were missing and its head was found in a battered condition, Forest Department sources said. The Forest Department have registered a case. The Veterinary Surgeon at Seethathode, D. Shinekumar, conducted an autopsy on the carcass before it was cremated in the forest this afternoon. According to Dr. Shinekumar, a `neurogenic' shock might have been the immediate cause of death of the pachyderm. Meanwhile, the putrefied carcass of a bison too was found in the Kakki forests, near the Kakki reservoir of the Sabarigiri hydro-electric project in the same forest range today. Dr. Shinekumar conducted the autopsy this afternoon. Another elephant carcass was found at Ponnambalamedu in the Goodrickal forest range on Sunday. The Forest sources confirm that not less than 11 elephant carcasses were found in the Goodrickal forest range during the past one year. Ironically, Goodrickal range had been identified for inclusion in Project Elephant.
