KOZHIKODE, APRIL 6. The Judicial First Class Magistrate's Court (V) today released on bail 25 persons arrested yesterday by the police on the charges of creating a riot-like situation at Kinnasseri near here. The police had arrested them on Monday night after they had obstructed the police from taking into custody some youths wanted in connection with their investigations into peddling of drugs in the area. The trouble started after the police arrested the youths from the Thottumaram ground in Kinnasseri at around 7-30 p.m. However, the local people protested against their arrest. After forcefully releasing the arrested persons from the police vehicle, the agitated mob blocked the road with two concrete electric posts. They also threw stones at the police personnel, including the Circle Inspector of the Kasaba police station. More police force were rushed to the scene to deal with the situation. The police even resorted to a mild lathicharge to disperse the agitated mob. Finally, the police overpowered the mob and arrested 25 persons in connection with the incident. All of them have been charged-sheeted under various sections of the Prevention of Destruction to Public Property Act. They were produced before the court on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the local people alleged that the police had arrested innocent people who had come to buy provisions at the market and who had alighted from buses at Kinnasseri.
