Congress, Janata Dal (S) facing rebel candidates

By Our Special Correspondent

GULBARGA, APRIL 6. The rebel candidates of the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) remain in the fray in the Sedam and the Yadgir Assembly constituencies, respectively. The last date for withdrawal of nomination papers was on Monday.

The zilla panchayat member, Mukram Khan, of the Congress is contesting as the Bahujan Samaj Party candidate in Sedam. Veerabasantreddy, who was denied the ticket by the Janata Dal (S) in Yadgir, is in the fray as an independent candidate.

The Congress nominated the former Vice-President of the zilla panchayat, Sharanaprakash Patil, in Sedam, rejecting the claims of Mr. Khan. The Janata Dal (S) fielded one of its general secretaries, A.C. Kadloor, in Yadgir. Dr. Veerabasantreddy finished behind the Minister, A.B. Maalakaraddy, in the constituency as the Janata Dal (United) candidate in 1999. The Congress was saved the blushes in Yadgir after the District Cooperative Credit Bank Chairman, Mallikarjun Reddy Koulur, a close follower of the Home Minister, M. Mallikarjun Kharge, relented to pressure and withdrew his nomination papers as an independent candidate.

The Janata Dal (S) was successful in persuading its senior leader, T.N. Rathod, and the Dalit Sangarsha Samiti State convener, D.G. Sagar, to withdraw his papers from the Kamalapur (Reserved) constituency. The party had allotted the Kamalapur seat to the Communist Party of India (Marxist), which had fielded its State Secretariat member, Maruti Manpade. The zilla panchayat member, Narasimha Naik, who resigned from the Congress, had sought the Janata Dal (S) ticket from Surpur.

After his plea was rejected, he joined Kannada Nadu and filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate and the Kannada Nadu nominee. However, his nomination papers as an independent candidate were accepted and he was declared an independent candidate.

The lowest number of five candidates is in the fray in Sedam, while the highest of 15 is in Gulbarga.
