BIJAPUR, APRIL 6. Fifty candidates are left in the fray in the eight Assembly constituencies in Bijapur district after the last date for withdrawal of nomination papers on Monday. Polling is on April 20. In Bijapur city, the Congress rebel, Raj Ahmad Talikota, withdrew his nomination papers after much persuasion from party leaders. The Minister of State for Minority Welfare and Indian System of Medicines and Homoeopathy, M.L. Ustad, who has been re-fielded by the Congress in the constituency, held a meeting with Mr. Talikota in the presence of community leaders. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has fielded Appasaheb Pattanashetti in the constituency, got the Shiva Sena candidate, Siddanna Shirur, withdraw his papers. Riyaz Ahmad Faruqui (Janata Dal-Secular), Vishwanath Bhavi (Kannada Nadu), Dharmanna Shivayogappa Tontapur (Bahujan Samaj Party-BSP), M.K. Nagargoj (Urs Samyukta Paksha-USP), Revanasiddappa Kadechur (Rashtriya Janata Dal), and Rajesh Y. Valyapur (independent) are the other candidates in the constituency. In the Indi constituency, a two-time independent MLA, Ravikanth Patil, B.G. Patil Halasangi (Congress), Sarvabhouma Bagali (BJP), Malappa Ukkali (Janata Dal-S) and Mehaboob Abdul Ganisab Arabi and Jitendra Kamble, independents, remained in the fray. Rathikanth Patil, who was a dummy candidate for his younger brother, Mr. Ravikanth Patil, and Shrishail Kittali, who filed his papers as an independent candidate, withdrew their nominations on Monday. S.K. Bellubbi (BJP), Shivanand Patil (Congress), Ramappa Siddappa Domnal (Janata Dal-S) and S.A. Yarnal (Kannada Nadu) are the candidates in Basvanabagewadi. Tikota has the highest number of 10 candidates among the eight constituencies. M.B. Patil (Congress), M.S. Rudragoudar (Janata Dal-U), Jakkappanna Yadave (Janata Dal-S), Rajendragouda Policepatil (Janata Party), Annappa Bheemappa Biradar (Kannada Nadu), Govind Ramachandra Shirolkar (Shiva Sena), and Kalavati Shankar Naik, Jayasingh Rupsingh Jadhav, Lakshman Tatuba Jadhav and Subasgouda Patil, independents, are in the fray. The Minister for Agriculture Marketing, B.S. Patil Sasanur (Congress), Shivaputrappa Desai (BJP), Namdev Ramappa Hoskote (Janata Party), Malakendragouda B. Patil (Janata Dal-S), Sanganagouda Dyamanagouda Patil (Kannada Nadu) and Mohmad Umar Rajapatel, an independent, are the candidates in the Huvinahipparagi constituency. Six candidates remain in the fray in the Muddebihal constituency. In Ballolli (Reserved) constituency, Raju Algur (Congress) Vittal Katakdonda (BJP), R.K. Rathod (Janata Dal-S), Parusharam Jigajinagai (Kannada Nadu) and Prakash Alkunte (Raitha Sangha) are contesting.
