Electioneering picking up in Bellary district

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELLARY, APRIL 6. With polling scheduled for April 20 in the district, electioneering in various Assembly constituencies is gradually picking up. The candidates, including those of the major political parties, have started padayatras and have been addressing area-wise public meetings.

For a change, in these elections, only a couple of autorickshaws fitted with public address systems were seen moving in the city.

In Bellary city, M. Diwakar Babu, Minister of State for Cooperation, who is seeking re-election for the third time in succession, has been interacting with the people of various localities and communities, assuring them to fulfil their needs and address their problems if returned to power. He has been appealing to the people to consider the work of the State Government and the development works taken up by him in the city.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, B. Sriramulu, who was defeated in 1999, and the Janata Dal (S) candidate, Sirigeri Pannaraj, have also been visiting various areas and addressing public meetings. The BJP leaders such as B. Somashekar Reddy, municipal president, and Padmavathi, former municipal president, have been accusing the Congress of failure in providing basic amenities.

In the Kurgodu Assembly Constituency, the Janata Dal (S) candidate, N. Suryanarayan Reddy, a granite exporter, has been leaving no stones unturned to avenge his defeat in 1999. The BJP candidate, Ramalingappa, besides going around the constituency, organised a public meeting which was addressed by the party leader, K.S. Eshwarappa.

The Congress candidate is Allum Veerbhadrappa, Minister for Water Resources (Krishna Basin) who is seeking re-elction for the fourth time in succession.

Prathibha, the BJP candidate contesting from Sandur for the first time, has also been going around the constituency.
