'Pondicherry will witness more development'

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, APRIL 6. The Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Ravi Shankar Prasad, has said the "splendid" performance of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Government at the Centre under the leadership of the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, during the last five years has earned great respect for the country all over the world. Mr. Vajpayee gave meticulous attention to improving the lot of all sections of people.

The NDA wave across the country would ensure return to power of the alliance in the May 10 Lok Sabha elections.

Launching a campaign today to seek the voters' support to the Bharatiya Janata Party nominee, Lalitha Kumaramangalam, for the lone Lok Sabha seat here, he said the country had achieved 10.4 per cent growth in the economy.

He said the NDA's five-year rule established unique records in development of infrastructure, food security, and telecom connectivity and in the implementation of a massive highway development programme.

The Union Minister said Pondicherry would witness more development and if Ms. Kumaramangalam were elected from here she would be assigned a responsible position at the Centre. The economic development of Pondicherry had been taken care of. Important projects to promote export activities including the proposal to link the port here under the Sagar Mala scheme had been initiated.

The share of Rs. 82 crores in Central Sales Tax had been earmarked to the Union Territory. The Prime Minister had never discriminated against Pondicherry.

He said Ms. Kumaramangalam always associated herself with social service activities and non-governmental organisations to ameliorate the lot of the poor.

Ms. Kumaramangalam said during her visit to rural areas to seek the people's support she had realised that the problem of poverty, unemployment and backwardness had not been properly tackled. She noticed that the people were also feeling insecure.

She appealed to voters to exercise their franchise for the development of Pondicherry under the BJP's rule.
