Another shame

Sir, — The burglary at the Shastri Memorial Museum in New Delhi, which came close on the heels of the theft of the Nobel prize medallion from Santiniketan, is a matter of national shame.

Though the books and memorabilia belonging to Lal Bahadur Shastri have been recovered and arrests made, the episode brings into focus the larger issue of the safety of valuable books in national libraries and memorabilia of eminent personalities preserved for decades.

Severe action must be initiated against those indulging in such theft of books, national souvenirs, artefacts and keepsakes of celebrities so that none ever dare commit such brazen acts in future. The security machinery in important national institutions should be upgraded.

H. Narayanan,
Bangalore
