Film personalities in TD final list

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, APRIL 6. Faced with the prospect of more party rebels entering the electoral fray as Independents, the Telugu Desam leadership grappled with the task of finalising the concluding list of 25 candidates on Monday and today.

Treading cautiously, the TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, did not officially release the candidates' list on Monday but quietly went ahead with giving the `B' form to those whose names had been cleared. There are at least 10 TDP rebels in the contest from Tekkali, Payakaraopet, Vikarabad, Asifabad, Metpally, Manthani, Indurthi, Peddapalli, Mahabubabad and Bhadrachalam.

Till this afternoon, when Mr. Naidu left for Visakhapatnam to participate in a public meeting along with the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the final list was not ready. A party official said the TDP chief would scrutinise the list en route Vizag and release the names to enable candidates to file their nominations on the last date, April 7.

Film actress Roja (Nagari), the Director-General of the A. P. Vaidya Vidhana Parishad, K. Anji Reddy (Sattenapalle), and Kodali Sri Venkateswara Rao (better known as Nani) who produced the film, `Andhrawala', (Gudivada) are among the candidates figuring in the final list. Party sources said NTR Jr, the budding Telugu actor, met Mr. Naidu in the morning and made a strong pitch in favour of Nani, who held a mega-rally in Gudivada, a few weeks ago to stake claim for the seat.

The tussle for the Tirupati Assembly seat was amicably settled by accommodating the town Municipal Chairman, A. Sankar Reddy, at Puttur and fielding N. V. Prasad, a close relative of his arch-rival and former MLA, Ch. Krishnamurthy, from Tirupati. Among the other candidates is a former Sub-Judge, Imtiaz Ahmed (Vayalpad). The party has dropped ex-MLAs in Gudivada (Raavi Venkateswara Rao), Puttur (R. Rajasekhar Reddy), Tirupati (Ch. Krishnamurthy), Cuddapah (S. A. Khaleel Basha), Sattenapalle (Y. Anjaneyulu) and Vinukonda (V. Yellamanda Rao). The party has to finalise the nominee for only one seat - Koilkuntla.

The following are the candidates:

Eluru: M. Ranga Rao, Mudinepalli: Yerneni Sita Devi, Gudivada: Kodali Sri Venkateswara Rao (Nani), Kaikalur: Kamili Vittal, Vinukonda: Leelavathi, Macherla: Brahma Reddy, Sattenapalli: K.
