990 in fray for first phase

Hyderabad: A total of 990 candidates -- 133 for the Lok Sabha and 857 for the Assembly -- are in the fray for the first phase of elections. The Additional Chief Electoral Officer, Ajay Sawhney, told reporters here on Tuesday evening that no constituency had more than 16 candidates, the maximum number handled by the electronic voting machine. He said, only one nomination, from Srikakulam, was rejected on grounds of `conviction' for a criminal offence.

TDP men firm on Proddatur

Cuddapah: Some 25 Telugu Desam Party activists continued their hunger strike in Proddatur town for the second day on Tuesday demanding re-allotment of the Assembly seat to the TDP. The TDP's constituency publicity secretary, Kamisetty Babu, and other activists have been demanding cancellation of the seat allotted to the BJP and fielding of the TDP constituency incharge, M. Linga Reddy, for the Proddatur segment. Meanwhile, Mr. Linga Reddy met the TDP chief, N. Chandrababu Naidu, in Hyderabad, along with the party's Cuddapah Lok Sabha candidate, M.V. Mysoora Reddy.

CPI(M) names candidates

Hyderabad: The CPI(M) on Tuesday named Nimmagadda Ramamohan Rao for Mangalagiri (Guntur) and Jakka Venkaiah for Kovur (Nellore) Assembly seats on Tuesday. In Mangalagiri the CPI(M) candidate would be contesting against M. Hanumantha Rao of the Congress and Girija of the BJP. In Kovur Mr. Venkaiah would be up against P. Srinivasulu Reddy of the Congress and N. Prasanna Kumar Reddy of the TDP. The CPI(M) also fielded candidates against the Congress in Khammam and Nalgonda and against the TRS in Bhongir and Sangareddy Assembly seats.

BJP suspends two rebels

HYDERABAD: The BJP suspended D. Sambaiah and Kranthi Lingam for remaining in the fray as Independent candidates against the official nominees from Sayampeta and Maharajganj Assembly constituencies respectively, the State BJP president, N. Indrasena Reddy, said here in a press release on Tuesday.

YSR's kin keen to enter fray

Cuddapah: The Cuddapah Zilla Parishad vice-chairman and brother-in-law of the former CLP leader, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, P. Ravindranath Reddy, staged a banner of revolt on Tuesday by announcing his resolve to file nomination for the Cuddapah Assembly segment on Wednesday. At a press conference here, Mr. Ravindranath Reddy said he would exert pressure on Dr. Rajasekhara Reddy and senior leaders to field him as party candidate by modifying the candidature of the Cuddapah Municipal Chairman, Md. Ahmedullah, which had been declared. Mr. Reddy said he would file nomination and try for the party ticket, but would not contest as an Independent.

CPI(ML) to field candidates

ONGOLE: The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) along with the ML Committee Andhra Pradesh, the Marxist Communist Party of India, the CPI(ML)-Liberation and the Socialist Unity Centre of India is fielding its candidates in nine Lok Sabha and 30 Assembly segments in the State. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the CPI(ML) Central Committee member, Gurram Vijaykumar, said candidates of these revolutionary forces would be in the fray in Parvatipuram, Kakinada, Bhadrachalam, Warangal, Anantapur, Miryalguda, Secunderabad, Eluru and Narsapur Parliamentary constituencies.

Mana TV offer on EAMCET

HYDERABAD: Mana TV channel 2 will run one-hour revision sessions on mathematics, physics and chemistry for the benefit of residential junior college students appearing for EAMCET from Wednesday. The transmission schedule is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. - mathematics, 11 a.m. to 12 noon - physics and 12 noon to 1 p.m. - chemistry. This schedule will be followed till May 1.Mana TV KU band signal is available at 1,805 locations all over the State at Government residential schools, junior colleges, degree and polytechnic colleges and at 330 MPDA/MRO offices. Revised admission schedule

Hyderabad: In a revised schedule the date of admission of students of minority colleges in the State in the first list has been changed to April 28 from April 26. This change is done since the general election in some areas are being held on April 26. However, the schedule from April 5 to April 21 remains unchanged, according to a press release of the Commissioner, School Education.

Three killed in road mishap

VIJAYAWADA: Three persons, including a seven-month-old child, were killed while three others sustained injuries in a head-on collision between a lorry and a Maruti Zen car at Nawabpet village in Penuganchiprolu mandal of Krishna district on Tuesday afternoon. The victims, all occupants of the car, were proceeding to Hyderabad from Kodur, when the lorry, laden with rice bags, coming in the opposite direction from Kodad towards Vijayawada, rammed into their vehicle at around 2 p.m. While the driver of the vehicle, Ramulu (35), and a woman, U. Rajyalakshmi (25), died on the spot, the latter's younger son, U. Yeshwant Sai, succumbed to injuries while being shifted to the hospital.

4 cm rain in Yellandu

Hyderabad: There was isolated rain in coastal Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema on Tuesday. Yellandu received a rainfall of 4 cm, Anantapur and Prathipadu 2 cm each and Hindupur 1 cm.

The highest day temperature for the day was 40 degree Celsius in Adilabad and Nizamabad. According to a forecast issued by the State Met Office, light to moderate rain is expected at a few places in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema.

Vote fearlessly, people told

Cuddapah: The Election Observer, Narayana Singh, on Tuesday warned of stern action against persons violating the model code of conduct. Speaking to newsmen at Kodur, he said special attention was being paid on villages wherein clashes occurred in previous elections. Foolproof measures were being taken in the naxalite-affected villages, he said and appealed to people to cast their votes without fear.

Annual day celebrated

TIRUPATI: Speakers at the fourth annual day of `Manovikas', a special school for the mentally challenged, urged public to be sensitive to social issues. The general secretary of the school, Balakrishnamoorthy, said the institute run by an NGO, People's Action for Social Service, provides vocational training to the mentally challenged. V. Suryanarayanara Rao, speech pathologist at the TTD-run S V Deaf School, explained the factors behind audio/speech impairment in infants. Ushasree, a psychology professor at SVU, urged the public to desist from marrying blood relatives and going for X-rays extensively during pregnancy and thereby prevent chances of children getting disabilities. Later, Revathi Chalam, president of Sri Vasavi women's association distributed prizes to the children.

Former MLA resigns

Cuddapah: The former MLA of Lakkireddipalle, G. Dwarakanatha Reddy, resigned from the Congress on Monday protesting against denial of party ticket for Lakkireddipalle Assembly segment. Meanwhile, the BJP State Executive member, A. Harinath Reddy, and the Lakkireddipalle Assembly constituency convenor, Ramachandra Reddy, also resigned from their posts, alleging non-cooperation by the TDP leaders of Proddatur and Thamballapalle constituencies. They stated that although the BJP was allotted the seats by the TDP, the ruling party functionaries were likely to be in the fray as independents and work against the BJP.

Polytechnic applications

Madanapalle: The application forms for the ensuing polytechnic entrance test CEEP-2004 will be sold at the Government Adarsha Gurukula Polytechnic, Madanapalle. The forms can be obtained by paying Rs. 230 in cash or through a DD for Rs. 230 in favour of the Secretary, State Board of Technical Education and Training, AP, Hyderabad, according to G. Venkateswara Rao, principal of the college. The last date for submission of applications is April 8 and the test would be held on May 14.
