PATNA, APRIL 6 . Shiv Shankar Prasad Gupta, a former police station in-charge accused in the much-hyped Bhagalpur blinding case, has been sent to the jail to serve the sentence awarded by a trial court in 1987. Special judicial magistrate (in-charge) of CBI, Patna, P. D. Gupta also realised a fine of Rs 2,000 from Gupta, being a part of the sentence. The trial court on April 8, 1987 in its judgement had awarded two years' rigorous imprisonment and a fine against the three accused including Gupta. According to the charges, Jugal Beldar a resident of Amarpur Police station area of Bhagalpur district lost his eyesight permanently when acid was poured into his eyes while in police custody on June 21, 1980. Gupta was the in-charge of Amarpur police station at that time and was the main accused.
