KOLLAM, APRIL 6. Residents in the Asramam, Uliyakovil and Kadappakada areas of the city, who depend on the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) supply for their daily water requirements, have alleged that the supply from the authority's Asramam overhead tank has been irregular and inadequate for the last couple of months. The tank has a capacity of 27 million litres for supplying water to the areas from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. daily. Since water from the Sasthamcotta Lake is insufficient to meet the requirement, a borewell has been constructed at the Asramam tank complex. was poor on most of the days and it was not even maintained for one full hour, the residents alleged. Enquiries made at the KWA showed that the borewell at Asramam has not been functioning for the past three months and that the Asramam tank solely depended on the meagre supply from Sasthamcotta to meet the requirements of the densely populated areas of Kadappakada, Uliyakovil and Asramam. The sources at the KWA said that while the estimate for repairing the borewell was taken three months ago, it could not be carried out. The residents said that the existing borewell had to be replaced.
