PDP, Congress leaders resign in Kashmir
SRINAGAR
The ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) and its coalition partner, the Congress, have been jolted by the resignation of two of their leaders.
Nazir Ahmed Khan, the president of the youth wing of the PDP, has resigned from the party after he was denied a ticket to contest the elections from the Srinagar-Budgam parliamentary constituency.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Khan accused Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and his daughter, Mehbooba Mufti, of making the party their personal fiefdom, ignoring the contributions of the party workers. Mr. Khan, whose father is a minister in the Mufti Government, accused Ms. Mufti of using dictatorial tactics in selecting candidates and said that the PDP had failed to deliver on its promises. He also announced that he would be contesting as an Independent candidate from Srinagar.
Meanwhile, Tariq Mohiuddin, former general secretary of the Pradesh Congress and a member of the State working committee, has resigned from the party.
In a statement issued here, Mr. Tariq said that the Congess had deviated from its basic principles and was plagued by groupism.
The J & K Congress is a group of sycophants and opportunists, he alleged, adding that in league with the PDP it was playing a dubious role in Kashmir politics. Mr. Tariq is reported to be likely to join the National Conference.
