Matching Bhupen in poetry

GUWAHATI, APRIL 6. If singer Bhupen Hazarika brought in sheer poetry in his speech, the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, did not lag far behind.

During his hour-long speech at an election rally here today, the Prime Minister complimented the singer-turned politician for his praise that he [Mr. Vajpayee] was independent India's "greatest" Prime Minister, a "yogi, worshipper of peace and progressive poet."

The Prime Minister struck a chord by his remarks on Mr. Hazarika as well as the murky weather.

"Even rain God seems to be pleased with the BJP's day (party's foundation day) and this rally for Mr. Hazarika as the clouds seem to have receded," he said.

Pointing to the grey clouds, Mr. Vajpayee said "lagte hai ke woh be tham gaye hum ko sunne'' (seems that the cloud has stopped to listen to us). This drew thunderous applause from the crowd of over 20,000.

"As I came to the venue I feared that rain will play spoilsport, but that is not the case as you can see," Mr. Vajpayee said.
