One killed, 2 hurt in clash at Central Jail

KANNUR, APRIL 6. One inmate in the Kannur Central Jail here was killed and two others were injured in a clash that broke out inside the prison between two groups of inmates reportedly belonging to the CPI(M) and the BJP. The deceased has been identified as K.P. Raveendran (40), who has been undergoing life imprisonment in a murder case registered in the Nadapuram police station in Kozhikode. He was a CPI(M) worker. The injured are Raju and Kunhu alias Rajesh, who have been sentenced to life imprisonment in two separate murder cases registered in the Valayam police station in Kozhikode and Anthikkad police station in Thrissur respectively. The two injured were also CPI(M) workers.

Raveendran, who received serious injuries on his head in the attack, died at the Pariyaram Medical College Hospital at around 7 p.m. The other two have been admitted to the Government District Hospital here. According to jail authorities, a group of 35 jail inmates, who were BJP sympathisers or workers undergoing imprisonment in various political violence cases, attacked another group of inmates having links with the CPI(M) near the prison canteen of the Block 7 at around 3.15 p.m. The attackers were led by inmates identified as Anil, Phalgunan and Pavithran, the police sources said. They used iron rods for the assault.

Some blocks in the prison had witnessed similar clashes in the past between convicts belonging to the two rival political parties.
