Plea for change of weekly holiday in Pakistan rejected

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, APRIL 6. The Pakistan National Assembly today rejected a resolution tabled by the religious parties for change of weekly holiday from Sunday to Friday.

Members belonging to the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), Syed Nasib Ali Shah, Akhunzada Muhammad Saddique, Mufti Ibrar Sultan, Shah Abdul Aziz and Qari Abdul Bais Siddiqui, moved the resolution.

The House rejected the private members' resolution after the Information Minister, Sheikh Rashid Ahmad, maintained that there was no precedent in the Islamic history of observing Friday as weekly holiday.

He said that a large number of people participate in Juma prayers due to the observance of Friday as half-day.

The Minister argued that economy of the country would suffer if Friday were the weekly holiday in place of Sunday.

Observance of Friday as weekly holiday is part of the agenda of religious parties for conversion of all laws and practices according to `Islamic' system.
