Madurai
By Shastry V Mallady
MADURAI, APRIL 6 . In an early morning operation, the Education department flying squad today caught red-handed a multi-district impersonator who has been appearing for public examinations for different students. The youth, Ravi, was caught when he came to the examination centre at Tirumangalam, near here, to write the X Standard English Paper II, and was handed over to the police to whom the youth confessed to having written examinations for several students. He had appeared for Secondary School Leaving Certificate examinations in Madurai, Theni and Dindigul districts and is involved in impersonation since March, 2003. The youth had `swallowed' the hall-ticket when he was picked up by the squad. The Deputy Director of Government Examinations, S. Shanmugam, told The Hindu today that the culprit had applied as a private candidate for five students with his photograph. He had been moving to various places to write the examinations, including Periyakulam. He had done a similar impersonation in March, 2003 also when he appeared for four candidates and also in the October examinations. The attestation of headmasters had been forged by him in the hall tickets. The Education department officials, Mr. Shanmugam said, got suspicious last year itself by looking at the same photograph on several application forms but he had managed to escape because of different addresses. But the officials, this time, planned a quick operation to nab the impersonator as again it had became clear from the photos on the applications, he said. They swung into action early morning and waited at the examination centre. According to Mr. Shanmugam, the applications submitted by the youth were scrutinised and the photos checked thoroughly. Finally, when the `candidate' came to the Government Boys High School at Tirumangalam to appear for the examination, the squad caught him. The department has been searching for him for the past four days, Mr. Shanmugam who led the squad, said. However, the impersonator had managed to write English Paper I for another candidate. Today, he appeared for one C. Satish Kumar with hall ticket number 753885. The Deputy Director said further action would be taken by the Tirumangalam police.
