BSNL denied permission to dig up roads

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, APRIL 6. The Town Planning Standing committee of the Kochi Corporation today refused permission to the telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to dig up the roads for laying cables.

The telecom company had approached the civic authorities to dig up 27 city roads at a length of 10,000 km and offered to complete the laying of cable within 15 days. The cable was to be laid through 10 Corporation divisions. The firm had also offered Rs.52 lakh for restoration works for laying cables. However, the committee, which met here today, decided to take a decision in this regard in consultation with the corporation councillors.

Meanwhile, the Kochi Corporation has decided to check the unauthorised filling up of paddy fields and marshy lands in the city area. The civic authorities have cautioned against the filling up of lands and constructing buildings in areas for which the civic authority has not issued building permits.

The Corporation's decision comes in the wake of the recent boom in the real estate market and the unauthorised filling up of lands and converting them into residential plots. The filling up of such areas also contributes to the water logging in the city, civic authorities said.
