Opposition against `Thookkam'

KOCHI, APRIL 6. The district unit of the Hindu Aikya Vedi has decided to oppose the proposed holding of `Thookkam' at the Puthenkavu Bhagavathy temple in Elavoor, near Aluva. The district president of the Vedi, R. V. Babu, said at a press conference here today that the practice of Elavoor `Thookkam' was a primitive one and it sullied the name of Hindu religion. He called upon the district administration and social and religious leaders to take the initiative to stop the practice, which had re-emerged after a gap of 17 years

Move against UDF

The Kerala Vikalanga Association, the combine of physically challenged persons in the State, has decided to array against the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidates in the forthcoming Lok Sabha election in protest against the Government's failure to consider their plea for permanent Government employment, the president of the Association, M. James, told newspersons here today.

Row over right to work

The Njarakkal and Mulavukadu police had to intervene today when two groups of workers on the Goshree bridges work site nearly came to blows over the right to work on the approach roads for the Goshree bridges. The work was disrupted in the morning hours owing to the tense situation. However, the intervention of the police cooled tempers and the two groups agreed to sit down for talks on Wednesday.

Five held

Four women and a man were held for alleged immoral activities here on Tuesday. The team from South police station raided the premises of Advaitha Ayurveda Clinic at Manikath Cross Road, Ravipuram. According to the police, Molly and Geetha were said to be running the clinic with the help of Hema, Suja and Bressie. The arrested persons will be produced before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate on Thursday.
