Students get a jolt

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, APRIL 6. Delhi University students appearing for the first year examination of Philosophy received a rude shock on Tuesday when the question paper was found to have questions from only one optional area. Luckily for the University, only one college -- Jesus and Mary -- had opted for the Aesthetics paper, reducing the number of students affected by the faux pas.

The drama for this college's students, however, lasted at least an hour after the examination began during which the University was contacted and informed of the matter. On realising the blunder, the Controller of Examinations, B.S. Garg, had to fax a copy of the original question paper to the college and also give permission to provide grace time for the affected students.

Students appearing for the subsidiary paper of Philosophy are expected to select from the option Ethics and Aesthetics. According to the University, a majority of students opt for Ethics.

"Jesus and Mary was the only college which asked for the option of Aesthetics papers. Most students usually opt for the Ethics part, but this particular college had provided its students with the option. I am looking into the matter to find out how the mistake occurred. But on our part, we asked the college to give the students grace time to make up for the time wasted," Prof. B.S. Garg, told The Hindu .

But the college is clearly not enthused by the University's response.

"There was a lot of panic among the students when they realised that their chosen optional paper was not there. A lot of them were in tears not knowing what to do. It was a blunder and much time was wasted in correcting it," said JMC's Dinesh Adlakha, who is also a member of the Academic Council.
