Builder accused of murdering wife

BANGALORE, APRIL 6. The Sanjaynagar police on Tuesday arrested Niranjan Kumar, a builder, on the charge of murdering his wife, Keerthi (28), daughter of a former Union minister, Vijay N. Patil, from Maharashtra.

The Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Alok Mohan, told The Hindu that Keerthi had died under mysterious circumstances on Friday night, and the Sanjaynagar police had registered a case of unnatural death.

Niranjan Kumar had told the police that he had taken Keerthi to the M.S. Ramaiah Hospital on Friday night after she complained of chest pain. She was declared "brought dead on arrival." Keerthi had suffered injuries, and investigations revealed that she was murdered allegedly by her husband, Mr. Mohan said. The police registered a case of murder and arrested Niranjan Kumar. The cause of death is yet to be ascertained, Mr. Mohan said.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (North), Syed Ulfath Hussain, said Keerthi was from Mumbai and her husband was a native of Andhra Pradesh. Niranjan Kumar is an MBBS dropout. He was allegedly harassing his wife, Mr. Hussain said.

Two more murders: The body of a man aged around 30 years was found in a manhole at Kothanur Dinne in the Subramanyapura police station limits on Monday evening. He has not been identified. The police said the man's assailants had tied his hands and legs and strangled him. The body was shifted to the Kempegowda Hospital. The Subramanyapura police have taken up a case of murder.

Ramesh (35) of Arehalli was stabbed to death by three people in the Subramanyapura police station limits on Sunday night.

Harish, a relative of Ramesh, lodged a complaint with the police that Suresh, Mani, and Murthy took Ramesh to an arrack shop at 10.15 p.m. on Sunday. Later, they led him to an isolated area near Arehalli and allegedly stabbed him. Ramesh had a financial dispute with the accused. The Subramanyapura police have registered a case of murder.

Body found: In another incident, a 22-year-old man was found dead near the Dubasipalya railway gate in the Kengeri police limits on Saturday morning. Preliminary investigations revealed that he had consumed poison. His identity has not been established. The body was shifted to the Victoria Hospital.

Two arrested: The Peenya police have arrested Srinivasa (28) of Bettanagere, Dasanapura hobli, and Syed Akmal (20) of Ramanagara on the charge of making illicit liquor and selling it under the name of a popular brand.

Seven liquor boxes and bottles, sealing machines, spirit, essence, and other goods, worth about Rs. 5 lakh in all, have been seized from them, according to the police.

According to the police, the two accused were allegedly trying to sell the liquor outside a bar in Peenya when they were arrested. On information given by Srinivasa, the police raided his farmhouse in Nelagedaranahalli and seized the goods.

Bicycles recovered: The Vidyaranyapura police have recovered nine bicycles, in all worth about Rs. 8,000, which were stolen from Vidyaranyapura. Ashok (15) of Varadarajanagar has been arrested in this connection.

Theft charge: The Hanumanthanagar police have arrested two persons for allegedly stealing a 17-inch Titanium Apple Macintosh laptop worth about Rs. 1.5 lakh from a French national, Fabrik D. Gref, in Srinivasanagar.

The police said the two accused — Biswajit Shaw (19) of West Bengal and Kulkarni Satish (26) of Latur — were staying in the same building as Fabrik. They allegedly stole the laptop by breaking open the windowpanes of Fabrik's room. Fabrik was in the city to learn music. Shaw was a degree student in a city college, the police said.

Shop owners held: Four shop owners, who were allegedly selling fake inkjet cartridges, have been arrested by the City Crime Branch (CCB) police and 29 fake HP inkjet cartridges confiscated, according to the police.

The names of the accused were given as Mohan Singh (22) and Hukum Singh (23), who owned a shop on New Thippasandra Main Road, Murji Patil (42), who ran a shop in HAL 2nd Stage, and Muneesh (29) from Ulsoor.

`Fake documents': Hanumanthaiah (55) of Solur, Magadi taluk, has been arrested for allegedly producing fabricated documents at the court of a magistrate here to secure bail for three persons arrested by the Chamarajpet police.

Driver attacked: The driver of a water tanker driver, Parusharam, was assaulted, allegedly by BJP workers, on Kanakapura Road in Kumarswamy Layout police station limits on Monday night. Parusharam has lodged a complaint that his assailants also smashed the windscreens of the vehicle. According to him, he was attacked because the vehicle hit buntings put up by them.
