BHUBANESWAR, APRIL 7. Renowned Odissi exponent and recipient of the Padma Vibhushan award, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, died of cardiac arrest here today. He was 78. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. The guru breathed his last at 10 a.m. while he was being rushed to hospital after he suffered a stroke at his residence in the city. His mortal remains will be cremated at the Swarga Dwar ground on the Puri beach tomorrow. Hundreds of people, including a large number of his disciples, thronged the house of the guruto pay their last respects. Guru Kelucharan, who taught Odissi to thousands of boys and girls, including many from other countries, was also the guru of Sonal Mansingh, Madhvi Mudgal and the eminent dancer, the late Sanjukta Panigrahi. A symbol of humility, Guru Mohapatra, who performed on the stage till recently, had a career spanning over six decades. He was the guiding spirit behind Srjan, Odissi dance school being run by his son, Ratikanta Mohapatra, also an Odissi dancer. Kelu Babu also taught Odissi at the Kala Vikas Kendra, Cuttack, and the Odissi Research Centre, Bhubaneswar.
