Sir, The unanimity with which the political parties have recommended to the Election Commission that opinion polls be banned from the date of notification of elections and results of exit polls not be published before the last day of polling is welcome. If implemented, it will ensure that there is no bias in the minds of voters. Opinion polls carry the danger of becoming polls that influence opinion.

* * * Sir, Exit polls have become a major marketing mechanism for the media. Such polls give rise to a lot of confusion. Many political parties also misuse the media by fabricating their own poll predictions.
