Kuppana case: convicts file appeal

KOCHI, APRIL 7. The four accused who were convicted in the Kuppana hooch tragedy case today filed appeals against the verdict of the Kollam Sessions Court. The appeals were filed by Saji, Bhayi, Soni and Vipin B. Nair, accused numbers 1,5,7, and 8 respectively in the case.

B.Ed. college seats

A Bench comprising Justice Cyriac Joseph and Justice K. Padmanabhan Nair today allowed the management of self-financing B.Ed. colleges affiliated to the University of Kerala to fill 50 per cent of the merit seats. The directive came on an appeal filed by the Unaided Training College Management Association against a single judge's order allowing the university to admit students to the 50 per cent merit quota.

`Petition frivolous'

A Division Bench of the Kerala High court today imposed Rs. 25,000 on a petitioner for filing a frivolous petition, seeking a directive to the Chief Minister and other Ministers to remain in the office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In fact, the petitioner, Kochi-based Society for Social Security, had complained against the non-availability of the stamps of smaller denominations. The court said that it did not see the link between the non-availability of stamps and Ministers attending office.

Acquitted

Justice N. Krishnan Nair today acquitted Rajesh of Kothamangalam who was convicted in a case relating to the rape of a Thrissur Engineering College student. The incident took place in 1998. The Thrissur Sessions Court had acquitted four other students. However, the second accused, Rajesh, was convicted.

Custody of children

A Bench comprising Justice K.A. Abdul Gafoor and Justice J. M. James today allowed Eugena Archetty Abdulla, a U.S. citizen who married a U.S.-based Keralite to keep in her custody her children until the Texas Family court decided the dispute over the custody of the twins.
