KOZHIKODE April 7. The police went on red alert today in Vadakara taluk following outbreak of violence, mainly by supporters of the CPI(M), protesting against the murder of a party worker in the Kannur Central Jail on Tuesday. The Superintendent of Police (Kozhikode Rural), Vikram, told The Hindu that tension prevailed in some places following the attacks by participants of the funeral procession bringing the body of the CPI(M) worker, K.N. Raveendran. Two BJP party offices and a few shops belonging to BJP supporters were attacked in Kallachi and Ambalakulangara, he said. The party office at Kallachi, which is also the BJP's election committee office in Nadapuram Assembly segment, was set afire. The BMS office, located nearby, also came under attack. The BJP Lok Sabha candidate in Vadakara, K.P. Sreesan told The Hindu that his party men had taken care not to provoke the CPI(M) workers as it would have resulted in large-scale conflicts. He alleged that irate CPI(M) workers had destroyed the BJP's election posters and party flags in many places. The entire Vadakara taluk, a stronghold of the CPI(M), observed hartal today.
