Squall likely

NEW DELHI APRIL 7. The weatherman has forecast a slight fall in temperature in the Capital due to a partly cloudy sky on Thursday. There is a possibility of thundery development accompanied by squalls in some areas. The maximum temperature would hover around 38 degrees Celsius.

The maximum temperature recorded at Safdarjung and Palam on Wednesday was 39.7 and 40.5 degree Celsius, while the minimum was 21.6 and 22.5 degree Celsius, respectively. While Safdarjung recorded a maximum humidity of 74 per cent, at Palam it was 71 per cent, with the minimum humidity of 14 and 12 per cent, respectively.

Undertrial flees

NEW DELHI APRIL 7. A murder accused, who was taken to Tis Hazari Courts for appearance in a case, fled from the custody of a Delhi police constable from the court premises today.

Naveen Kumar Verma, who was in the custody of Constable Biju Thomas, was taken to Tis Hazari for appearance in court No. 241. After the hearing, he told Constable Thomas to take him to the court of R.K. Jain where he was supposed to move some application pertaining to a murder case in which he was an accused.

After submitting the application, Constable Thomas was taking Naveen to the lock-up when in the central hall someone pushed him from behind. He fell on the floor and getting an opportunity, Naveen fled from the scene.

Arrested

NEW DELHI APRIL 7. Ten people from a Tiruchirapalli village in Tamil Nadu, who were allegedly planning to commit a robbery in the Parliament Street branch of Standard Chartered Bank, were arrested by the New Delhi police from near the bank today. While the police recovered two country-made weapons and knives from their possession, they have launched a hunt for their accomplices.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi), Anita Roy, the police received a tip-off that some criminals had gathered near the Standard Chartered Bank with an intention to commit robbery in the afternoon. Subsequently, the police mounted surveillance in the area and picked up 10 suspects around 1-30 p.m. Country-made firearms and knives were recovered from their possession.

Tributes paid

NEW DELHI APRIL 7. Sangeet Natak Akademi and its associate bodies here today mourned the demise of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, the renowned master of Odissi dance, at Bhubaneswar earlier in the day.

"With the demise of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, the world of Indian dance has lost an outstanding performer and teacher, as well as an inspiring presence in the field," the Akademi observed in a condolence resolution.
