Qadir's googly
LAHORE: Former leg-spinner Abdul Qadir dropped a bombshell, suggesting that the Pakistan pace bowlers had a long history of ball tampering.
``The pace bowlers' success often came from working on the ball,'' Qadir told The Associated Press, opening an old debate about tampering with the ball to produce prolific reverse-swing.
Qadir said that increased scrutiny by umpires and television cameras had reduced the pace bowlers' success in recent times, including the current Test series against India.
``There are so many cameras focusing on every move of the players, particularly the bowlers, that it's become virtually impossible to work on the ball,'' said Qadir, 48, who claimed 236 wickets in 67 Tests.
Qadir's comments were made on the State-owned Pakistan Television when he was asked why Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Sami had not been effective against the Indian batsmen.
