The civic agency, which had pulled down nearly 500 slum tenements on Wednesday, today intensified its operations and demolished another 1,000. The Commissioner (Land Disposal), Dharmendra, said the demolition drive went on peacefully and though a strong police contingent accompanied the demolition squad as a measure of precaution, there was no untoward incident. Noting that the demolition was being carried out between Vijay Ghat and Salim Garh Fort on a "voluntary" basis and people were being encouraged to opt for relocation, he said the civic agency is avoiding forcible eviction. Given the task of demolishing about 12,000 tenements, the official said, DDA would take about a fortnight to complete the operation, which would primarily take place during the working hours.
