THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 8 . The drive to clean up the Amayizhanjan canal picked up pace today with high-powered pumps pressed into service to clear the culvert under the railway yard at Thampanoor. A huge mound of plastic containers and solid waste that had accumulated under the culvert was removed. Workers wearing oxygen masks inducted long pipes into the culvert to force pressurised water through the clogged passage. A floating tractor equipped with specialised machinery will be used to remove the waste. Efforts to desilt the stretch of the canal running parallel to the road in front of the Central Theatre also took off today.
