Pramila Nesargi stages dharna

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE APRIL 9. After having had her nomination papers rejected by the Returning Officer for the Chamarajpet Assembly constituency, the BJP leader, Pramila S. Nesargi, today staged a dharna in front of the Election Office here along with several party workers. She was protesting against the attitude of the Returning Officer, who has since been replaced by the Election Commission for a "technical error" he made while rejecting Ms. Nesargi's papers. Ms. Nesargi and her supporters went in a procession from her Chamarajpet residence to the Election Office and shouted slogans against the officials. Ms. Nesargi, who submitted a memorandum to the new Returning Officer, said it was only after she had protested vociferously that the earlier Returning Officer, Neelakanta, was replaced. The fact that he was replaced was proof that he was guilty of an error of judgment and, therefore, his decision rejecting her papers must be annulled, she contended in her complaint to the new Returning Officer.

Former MLA quits BJP

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore APRIL 9. B.V. Ramachandra Reddy, former Varthur MLA, has resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), unhappy with the way the party had gone about selecting candidates for the elections to the Legislative Assembly. In separate letters to the BJP State President, H.N. Ananth Kumar, the Chairman of the Election Campaign Committee, B.S. Yediyurappa, and the BJP coordinator for the elections in Karnataka, Arun Jaitley, he has said that the party had ignored the aspirations of party workers at the district level and selected candidates who had financial clout. Mr. Reddy has blamed Mr. Ananth Kumar and a State-level office-bearer for the selection of what he felt were the wrong candidates. Stating that Mr. Yediyurappa had been wronged by Mr. Ananth Kumar, Mr. Reddy, however, has criticised the former's silence over the developments in the party. He has also hit out Mr. Jaitley and ridiculed his criticism of the Congress leaders. Mr. Reddy, who was an aspirant for the BJP nomination for the Varthur seat, was sore that the party had selected the new entrant to the party, the former Janata Dal Minister, Ashwathnarayana Reddy, from that constituency to take on the Congress candidate and Minister, A. Krishnappa. Mr. Ramachandra Reddy and Mr. Ashwathnarayana Reddy are close relatives. Mr. Ramachandra Reddy was elected to the Legislative Assembly on the Janata Party ticket in 1978. He later defected to the Congress. He was for some time President of the Bangalore city unit of the BJP.

CPI to contest six Assembly seats

By Our Special Correspondent

Bangalore APRIL 9. Efforts to enter into a poll alliance with the Janata Dal (S) having failed, the State Council of the CPI has fielded six candidates for the Assembly elections in the State. The constituencies from where the CPI candidates will be contesting are Mulbagal (Kolar), Mudigere (Chikmagalur), Hubli city (Dharwad), Aland (Gulbarga), Uchagaon (Belgaum) and Belgaum city (Belgaum). The CPI State Council Secretary, Siddanagouda Patil, told presspersons here today that his party had made efforts to build a powerful alternative to the Congress and the BJP by forging an alliance with secular parties, including the Janata Dal (S). Mr. Patil said the CPI had also assured the Janata Dal (S) leader, H.D. Deve Gowda, of his party's support to Janata Dal (S) candidates in all other Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies. But even then Mr. Deve Gowda had not agreed. The CPI was, therefore, forced to field its candidates in six constituencies where it had considerable support, he said. The party candidates are M. Gopal (Mulbagal), Saathi Sundaresh (Mudigere), David Goni (Hubli city), Moula Mulla (Aland), Parimala Vijayakumar (Uchagaon) and Nagesh Saatheri (Belgaum city).
