Congress leader joins TDP

HYDERABAD: Gangula Prabhakar Reddy, who unsuccessfully contested as Congress candidate from the Allagadda Assembly constituency in 1999, joined the Telugu Desam Party in the presence of the party president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, and the former MP, Bhooma Nagi Reddy, here on Saturday.

He is the brother of Gangula Pratap Reddy, the Congress nominee for the Allagadda Assembly seat, who is pitted against Mr. Nagi Reddy.

Speaking to presspersons later, Mr. Reddy said that he was impressed by the `honest' efforts of Mr. Naidu in neutralising factions in the Rayalaseema region.

CM greets Christians

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Saturday greeted Christians on the eve of Easter on April 11.

In a message, he said good qualities of love, kindness, sacrifice and international brotherhood propounded by Christ would be relevant for all times.

Rebel suspended from Congress

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president, D. Srinivas, on Saturday announced the suspension of Jagadishwar Goud, the party's rebel candidate from Yellareddy Assembly constituency in Nizamabad district.

TRS leader quits party

HYDERABAD: Jalli Siddaiah, secretary of the TRS has announced his resignation from the party complaining of `irregularities' in the allotment of ticket and `lack of social justice.'

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Siddaiah, who was an aspirant, said of the 42 seats, being contested by the TRS, 25 seats had gone to upper castes.

Another TRS leader, M. Krishna Reddy, who quit sometime ago, announced formation of Telanagana Rashtra Praja Samiti.

Jolt to Telugu Desam

KAKINADA: The town unit of the Telugu Desam received a jolt with five party councillors along with other office-bearers announcing their resignation on Saturday protesting against the decision of the high command to renominate Vanamadi Venkateswara Rao from the Kakinada Assembly constituency.

At a press conference here, the party leaders said they were humiliated and subjected to insults by Mr. Venkateswara Rao. The councillors who resigned from the party were: Kampara Ramesh, Gubbala Radhakrishna, Koppadi Venkateswarlu, Komali Venkatalakshmi and Kampara Ramesh.

Poser to CM on liquor policy

HYDERABAD: The United Forum Against Liquor on Saturday asked the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, whether the present liquor policy would continue if the Telugu Desam Party was voted back to power.

Representatives of the forum, which launched State-wide `kalajatas' against liquor on March 15 in coordination with JanaVignana Vedika, criticised the State liquor policy which is netting it Rs.14,000 crores a year.

They said other parties like the Congress, the TRS, the CPI, the CPI(M) and the CPI(ML), had promised prohibition in a phased manner while the TDP remained silent on the issue.

Leaders of the forum -- M. Subbamma, V. Sandhya, V. Lakshman Reddy, P. Prempavani, B.Ch. Ranga Reddy, K.B.Tilak and N. Lakshmi Parvati -- urged the Election Commission to ban liquor ten days before the elections. They said the concluding function of `kalajatas' would be held here on April 16.

CPI (ML) groups merge

HYDERABAD: The CPI (ML) Janasakthi south regional provincial committee on Friday merged with the CPI (ML) Chandra Pulla Reddy central committee.

The merger came after talks that went on for three days between leaders of both groups. The leaders, according to a statement by the CPI (ML) central committee member, Radhakka, have agreed to sink their differences and work for a common agenda to strengthen the Chandra Pulla Reddy group.

SI, husband die in road mishap

ELURU: A Sub-Inspector of Police, Matta Sabita Sridevi (20), attached to the women police station in the district headquarters town, and her husband, Richars Prasad (28), died in a road accident at Duddukuru in West Godavari district on Saturday.

According to the Kovvuru Sub-Divisional Police Officer, M. Balaji Rao, the couple was run over by a quarry lorry while coming to Eluru from Rajahmundry on motorcycle. The SI, who was drafted for bandobust duty at Tanuku in connection with the visit of the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, went to her native place, Dhavaleswaram near Rajaymundry, on Friday after completing her duty.

Sabita, who was on probation, got married just a month ago.

Actor hurt in accident

KHAMMAM: The film actor, Venu, and his car driver were hurt in a road accident near Konijerla village on Khammam - Aswaraopet road on Saturday. The police said the car in which he was travelling overturned when the driver tried to avoid hitting a buffalo.

Both of them were admitted to hospital in Khammam.

Dry weather prevails

Hyderabad: Weather was mainly dry in coastal Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema on Saturday.

There was little change in the day temperature in the State. The highest day temperature for the 24-hour period ending this morning was recorded by Rentachintala at 42 degree Celsius.

According to forecast by the Met office, there will be isolated rain in coastal Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema.

SP's appeal to BCs

NELLORE: The Samajvadi Party (SP), has urged the BC functionaries to quit the major political parties like the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and communist parties and join the SP, as the parties have accorded a raw deal for the BCs in selection of candidates for the elections. In a statement issued here on Saturday, the SP's State general secretary, V.V. Raju, urged people belonging to BCs and other weaker sections to teach a befitting lesson to the parties for ignoring them.

Non-political body formed

MADANAPALLE: The people of India', a non political organisation, was inaugurated here on Saturday by B.V.S. Raju, vice-president of SCZIEP". The organisation will deal with problems of employees and other citizens and work for their welfare. The educationist, Chokka Ramiah, retired judges, judicial officers and lecturers, Government employees in service and those who have will rendering their services he said.

Heinemann remembered

Cuddapah: The Additional Director of Homeopathy, G. Ramakrishna, asserted on Saturday that the people were patronising Homeopathy as it not only cured chronic ailments but also was economical and had no side-effects.

Speaking at the 249th birth anniversary of the founder of Homeopathy, Dr. Samuel Heinemann, Dr. Ramakrishna said certain notions on Homeopathy were unfounded and sought the people's cooperation for popularising the form of medicine. He said the medical education cell, a multi-media LCD projector and a medical digital library was granted to Cuddapah, among the four Homeopathic hospitals in the State, with the assistance of the University of Health Sciences.
