Over a dozen TDP rebels in fray

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, APRIL 10. Over a dozen rebels of the Telugu Desam Party remain in the fray for the second phase of elections after the last date for withdrawal of nominations on Saturday.

However, the TDP leadership managed to persuade party rebels in an equal number of other Assembly constituencies to pull out of the contest and extend support to the official candidates.

The constituencies where these persuasive skills did not work are: Kadiam (Vadde Veerabhadra Rao), Pithapuram (M. Ranga Rao), Burugupudi (K. Atchamamba), Nagaram (P. Narayana Murthy), Kadiri (K. Venkata Prasad), Alur-SC (C. Govindanna), Avanigadda (former Minister Simhadri Satyanarayana), Guntur-II (Ch.Venkata Krishna Reddy), Repalle (M. V. Subba Rao, Municipal Chairman), Markapur (Janke Venkata Reddy), Atmakur (Lakshmi Naidu), Anantapur (V. Prabhakar Chowdary), Dharmavaram (Jayashree) and Koilkuntla (Karra Subba Reddy).

In Proddatur, the party could not persuade Linga Reddy to withdraw in favour of the BJP candidate, K. Balachandra Reddy.

Mr. Govindanna of Alur, was being pressured by the TDP leadership to retire in favour of the official candidate, Masala Padmaja, as he did not withdraw his nomination.

After all-out efforts by senior leaders of the TDP - P. Prabhakar Reddy and C. Ramachandraiah, the party achieved notable success in making Raavi Venkateswara Rao of Gudivada to withdraw in favour of Kodali Nani. Likewise, it also persuaded Doraiswamy Raju from Nagari and C. Ramachandra Reddy from Vayalpadu to withdraw and make things easier for film actress, R.K. Roja and S. Imtiaz Ahmed, respectively.

In Ongole, E. Hari Babu, Avanigadda, S. Arjun Rao and in Duggirala, Jayashree also withdrew, pledging support to the party's nominees.
