PATHANAMTHITTA, APRIL 10. The Nair Service Society (NSS) has warned its critics against misinterpreting its time-tested policy of maintaining equal distance from all political parties. Talking to The Hindu at Chengannur today, the NSS assistant secretary, G. Sukumaran Nair, said that certain political quarters were trying to misinterpret the equidistance policy of the NSS on the election eve. ``The BJP was not close to the NSS as the UDF or the LDF is. But now, the gulf has been bridged with the NSS acknowledging the BJP at par with the UDF and the LDF,'' Mr. Sukumaran Nair said. ``What is wrong if the NSS treats the BJP at par with the Congress and the CPI(M),'' he asked. Karunakaran flayed: The NSS spokesman said the statement of the senior Congress leader, K. Karunakaran, that certain representatives of the NSS and the SNDP had approached him with a plea to field candidates from their communities, was totally baseless. He alleged that Mr. Karunakaran was trying to do some `somersaults' in an attempt to cover up his `wrong-doings'. No NSS representative had approached any party leader with such a plea and Mr. Karunakaran should clarify who approached him on behalf of the NSS, he said. ``The NSS has nothing against the `I' group in the Congress in particular. But, we have our own strong reservations against Mr. Karunakaran's political stand on many issues,'' the NSS spokesman said. He alleged that Mr. Karunakaran had exceeded all limits of political decorum and was totally wrong in his statements on the NSS. ``It is high time Mr. Karunakaran stopped playing groupism in the name of Nair community and the NSS,'' he said. The NSS spokesman said that if the senior Congress leader continued his `unfounded criticism' against the NSS, he would have to face its `adverse reactions' from the community. Mr. Sukumaran Nair was in Chengannur in connection with the 90th anniversary celebrations of the NSS organised by the NSS taluk union today.
