CHENNAI, APRIL 10. The athletics fraternity felicitated the Tamil Nadu athletes, who won medals in the recently concluded SAF Games in Islamabad. In the make-shift podium at the Central Station here on Saturday, the President, Tamil Nadu Athletics Association, W.I. Davaram, garlanded the medal winners, M. Sangeetha, K.N. Priya and N. Latha, amid a gathering consisting of journalists, office-bearers of TNAA, and other athletes. Sangeetha won gold in high jump clearing 1.81m, creating a new meet record. While N. Latha won gold in shot put (15.36m), K.N. Priya clinched two silver in 110m hurdles (13.84s) and 4x100m relay. K. Suresh, the other member of the Tamil Nadu team who was part of the bronze-winning 4x100m relay squad, did not turn up as he is in the Indian camp in Patiala. Davaram said he was happy with the performance of the Tamil Nadu team. "Of the six-member team, four won medals. It is a creditable performance," he said. Davaram also said that in keeping with the State Government's initiative, the gold medallist of the SAF Games would receive Rs. 1 lakh, the silver medallist Rs. 50,000 and bronze Rs. 25,000. Sangeetha and Priya returned to Chennai on Thursday because of their engineering and management degree examinations. Only Latha and Muthuswamy (he participated in the 100m hurdles) arrived by Tamil Nadu Express on Saturday.
