257 withdrawals as nominations close

HYDERABAD,
APRIL 10.
The withdrawals for the second phase of elections in the State came to a close on Saturday when a large number of candidates who filed nominations opted out.
On the last day today, almost all the withdrawals, for the Assembly and the Lok Sabha, were by Independents, clearing the way for straight fights.
In all, 257 contestants withdrew their nominations from nearly 70 Assembly constituencies and 18 from six Lok Sabha seats, according to the election authorities here.
After the withdrawals, the number of candidates remaining in the fray for the second phase came down to 1,036 for the 147 Assembly and 148 for 21 Lok Sabha seats.
In comparison, there are 857 candidates for the 147 Assembly seats of phase I polling and 132 for the 21 Lok Sabha seats.
Polling for the first and second phases will take place on April 20 and April 26 respectively.
