`Health education is the key'

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, APRIL 10. Affordable healthcare, health education, and effective immunisation should be given importance to achieve the goal of "Health for All by 2020", D. Nagaraj, Director, National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, has said.

Making a presentation on "Vision of Health for All by 2020" at a function organised by Medical Academy here on Saturday, Dr. Nagaraj said health education was necessary for control and prevention of diseases, specially communicable ones.

If people get clean drinking water and if proper sanitary measures were taken, 80 per cent of the diseases could be controlled, he said.

Dr. Nagaraj said yoga and Ayurvedic medicine should be a subject of study for all medical students.

There was also an urgent need to focus on modifying lifestyles to prevent diseases such as diabetes, paralytic stroke, and other lifestyle-related diseases.

Mental illness also posed a major problem in the country, where cases of suicide and depression were going up. Steps should be taken to address the issue, he added. Dr. Nagaraj released a book "Yoga for pregnancy" written by the paediatrician, Shamantakamani Narendra.

Kamini Rao, infertility expert, inaugurated the programme. She said yoga had the answer to those problems in healthcare which modern medicine did not have.

Tejaswini Ananth Kumar, wife of BJP State unit President, H.N. Ananth Kumar, and R. Nagaratna, Dean, Division of Yoga and Life Sciences, were present.

Grants

Speaking to presspersons, Dr. Nagaraj said the Union Government had released Rs. 6 crore to NIMHANS this year to compensate for the cut in grants by the State Government.

He said the State Government had not released additional funds this year after grants to the institute were cut earlier this year.

The State and Union governments should discuss the issue and come to a consensus, he added.
